The beagle is classified as a hunting hound which were popular around before the 1700s but were replaced by the quicker foxhound for hunting expeditions. Today some still use the beagle to hunt small prey like rabbit but most are kept as pets and companions.

Due to the fact that it used to be a hunting hound, it has quite a reserve of energy, It will not do to keep it cooped up in small spaces for extended periods of time. It should have at least an hour of walking per day and be prepared for it to chase anything that catches its fancy. Despite its small size it does bark a lot, which can be annoying for your neighbors. Thus it is really not a breed designed to live in places where you may have plenty of neighbors.

This breed is very intelligent and needs a lot to keep it occupied. Should it have nothing to occupy itself with, it will start to chew things and dig wherever it pleases. If left alone to their own devices they will become destructive. They need to be mentally occupied a majority of the time and they also need a lot of attention.

Although quite intelligent it is a difficult dog to train for it really needs to associate the benefits that it gets when doing certain commands. This being the case it is quite stubborn and thus this breed is really not for the novice dog owner. You will need a lot of patience and understanding when owning this breed. It also takes a while to housebreak this breed.

When the dog reaches maturity, it's weight can reach anywhere between 18 to 30 pounds. It also has an average lifespan of around 10 to 15 years. When they fully grown they stand a little bit higher than a foot at the shoulders.

The most powerful skill of this dog is that it has a great sniffing ability. It is popularly known as a nose on legs, and many law enforcement agencies use this breed for bomb sniffing and drug sniffing operations. Should you own this dog, you will notice that it loves to sniff around looking for something interesting.

These dogs are also very friendly to everyone they meet, thus making them very lousy guard dogs. Due to their overt friendliness to everyone they are easy prey to thieves. Thus they should not be left outside of the home and be kept under lock and key so that they are not dog napped so to speak.
