4 Things To Consider When Naming Pets

By Robin Setser

Believe it or not, it can become quite the challenge to name a pet. It doesn't matter if you've had animals around your entire life or are just getting used to cats and dogs now. The truth is that deciding on the right name can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be impossible. As a matter of fact, if you are stumped on a particular alias for your animal friend, here are 4 things that you should consider.

If you want to know how to name your pet, you should know that simpler options tend to go the furthest. It's easy to see why, as they're easy to remember. Your pet will have an easier time responding to a one-word name as well, which will make the act of training that much easier. Sometimes you don't have to think too hard about choosing an alias. Companies such as Assisi Animal Health can tell you the same.

You might also want to choose a name for a pet based on their personality. For example, "Sparky" might be a great name for a dog that's outgoing and friendly, even toward strangers. On the flipside, the same name probably wouldn't work for a pet that's more introverted by comparison. Sometimes selecting a name comes down to the personality that a pet exhibits, which is another factor to keep in mind.

Another tip to consider is that dog names shouldn't sound too much like commands. To expand on this, let's say that you have perfected the trick "sit." In this scenario, your dog will be able to perform it without any hesitation. This might not be the case, however, if you decide to name your pet "Sid." The beginning of the name is too similar to the aforementioned trick. You don't want your animal friend to become confused.

Let's say that you're still stuck on a name; maybe all it takes is some inspiration to get you out of this slump. Believe it or not, many pet owners take names of characters from video games, TV shows, and the like, so why shouldn't you do the same? Keep in mind that the name you choose should still be easy enough to remember and for your pet to understand. If this is the case, you'll have a great choice on your hands.
