Preparing For And Getting Through Severe Cold

By Hedrick Lepsch

There is a reason no one ever talks of a vampire apocalypse. What is the reason, you ask? Because vampires are pansies and no one is afraid of them. Vampires are the private prep school students in the wide world of things that go bump in the night. They dress nice, are usually good looking, are nearly always a bit snobbish, and for immortal creatures that don't have a reflection and suck human blood vampires are still not that scary.

Shelter - You need to have a good sturdy tent and some stakes to keep it down. This is always a good idea even if you are planning on going star gazing. You never know when the weather can start getting nasty so make sure you have at least a back up plan. Along with the tent you should have at least one tarp as a ground cover and an ax to clear the brush.

The first way to ensure the safety of one's family during the extreme cold of the winter season is to take the time to adequately prepare. Preparations should include such things as preparing the home, the family car, and the family itself.

Cooking - Having the right gear for cooking is crucial. If you are just going to use a wood fire, you can expect to wait for a good while for things to heat up. Propane stoves can be a godsend that save you a lot of pain and hassle. Utensils, bowls, cups, and trash bags to pack out the rubbish are essential as well.

Akin to water, although usually not as important as food sources can be found readily by those who can hunt, fish, and forage, is food. Storing a few freeze dried meals or even simple snack bars as part of the zombie survival kit can go a long way when you are thrust from the comforts of your own home and put into an immediate survival situation.

Finally, a homeowner can prepare their home for defense against the bitter cold snaps of winter weather by striving to undertake a few different steps of proper preparation. A home that is well prepared for winter weather will be an adequate refuge from the deadly cold.

A home can be winterized by undertaking various options, but one of the most important is to ensure that the home has sufficient insulation both in the walls of the home and in the attic. Because heat rises, the attic of the home should be well insulated in order to keep the heat produced in the home within the home.

Plan - You should have a clear idea of where you are and what your plans are. You should also let someone back at home know where you are. There are many people who go without proper planning and come back sorry. Alongside proper planning there should be a map, a good way of communication (cell phones may not work in the back country so walky-talkies are a good substitute). Know where the nearest hospital, ranger station, and police station is because it is better to have an idea before you set out on your journey.

Those are the items that every Z.A. go-bag should contain however there are numerous more items and gear that could be included depending on personal preference. But one thing is for sure, in every zombie movie ever made, the hero survives (at least for a while), so be a hero and prepare like one.
